HP Desk Jet 6540 Tri-color Cartridge not recognized

HP Desk Jet 6540 Tri-color Cartridge not recognized. Clean contacts in ink print head, on cartridge, change 3 new cartridges; I try with and without connection to computer. How can I find out if problem is in the printer? Could I reinstall the program? Can I reset the printer memory? Thanks for reply.

Not sure if the problem is the same but found a work around for my C4599 with similar message at:

I had to substitute OK button for "green button" at one point but finally got the message to go away. Also not sure how permanent it is as I came across the Youtube solution only yesterday (after several months of frustration) and I have the eerie feeling its just waiting to reappear.
