HP desktop connect to NEC NP-40 projector

Using my 15-pin connector, when I connect my HP Pavilion desktop to my NEC-40 projector, the then-projected blue screen for "computer" states "no signal." What am I doing wrong ?

Extend your desktop onto the projector

Control panel/ display/ advanced/ click the monitor 2 then put a check in the box beside Extend my windows desktop onto this monitor


apply then OK

then all you do is drag your windows over to the new display
