Attempts to diagnose/ correct / repair:

  • Tested with multiple CDs and DVDs, both with and without data.
  • Failed on the most recent Windows 10 GA with all Windows updates as well as Windows Insider Build 20180, all cd and dvd media worked on HP laptop running standard Windows GA
  • Delete device driver. Reboot – no impact. Still failing in exact same way.
  • No error codes on device. Device status always say “This device is working properly”

  • Ran HP hardware diagnostics. Test always fails at 1% saying no media in reader
  • When you view My Computer and with a cd or dvd loaded, you can see the CR-Rom device, and if you click on properties with any cd or dvd loaded, it says Used Space 0 bytes, Free space 0 bytes, Capacity 0 bytes.
  • if you double click on device, with any cd or dvd loaded, it says “Please insert a disc into drive F:”
  • Booted into safe mode, tried various tests above, still failed.
  • Confirmed Bios up to date, AMI A0. 20 10/18/2018
  • Windows Updates offers no upgrades.
  • Cleaned lens on opened DVD/CD hardware tray - no help
Any help MUCH appreciated!!!

firmware of the DVD writer is up to date? SD03 Rev.A
https://support.hp.com/ie-en/driver...es/8499646/model/8901961/swItemId/cp-161106-2

Intel management engine (intel ME) is up to date as well?

1) I tried to download and install driver from SP74822.exe from the link you posted. It does not appear to extract anything or create any files / directories.

2) I'm also not sure how to check status / version of Intel management engine (intel ME).

Thanks for the suggestions.

Tried to "install" whatever was in SP74822. Screen flashed and then returned to where I was. Following reboot, device manager showed no change in driver version or information related to cd-rom. CD-rom DVD still fails exactly as described in initial post.

Also downloaded and install IME. Rebooted. Then found an update to IEM, downloaded and installed. Rebooted. CD-rom DVD still fails exactly as described in initial post.
