Is this laptop really as good as people are saying?

It's probably good, at first. If you go for it though, make sure to get an extended warranty.

And what people are saying this? Aside from the Envy series, I don't much care for HP laptops. I've seen quite a few older models die from heat issues.

Hm, the Amazon configuration shows it with Intel HD Integrated Graphics and 1366x768 screen resolution. It does have an i5-430 (2.26-2.53) but that doesn't make up for the lack in graphics power or the low res. Oh, and only 3.5 hours of battery life with a 12-cell battery on a 15.6" screen.

My Dell 5-year old laptop gets up to 6 hours of battery life with wireless on, with 1920x1200 resolution on a 17" screen.

Seems kinda meh-ish.
