So i want to upgrade my hp elite 7300. Currently it has a i7 2600 and 8gb of ram. I want to put a 970 in there but will it work? I can upgrade the psu if needed but iv heard the something which doesnt allow a 970 to work but can be fixed. Can some1 tell me if i put a msi gtx 970 in there how will i get it to work. Thanks!

It seems the 5xx series Nvidia cards are as high as you can go and the 7xxx AMD cards are as high as you go. You probably need HP's updated 8 series bios' to use the 6xx and above cards. Some cards have a uefi/legacy BIOS switch on the video cards that you can switch to and get around the needing the 8 series bios update for your pc.

I suggest getting a current model retail boxed motherboard if you are interested in upgrading to the latest video cards.
You would definitely need to upgrade the 300W PSU and I'm not sure what form factor it is, so I can't suggest a replacement. The specifications page and spare parts page don't have this information.

I don't see anything that outright says that you can't fit a GTX 970 in the elite 7300, but I can't find information on the maximum graphics card size to be sure. If it does fit, you may need to do something about air flow if the card ends up running too hot. The Elite 7300 really isn't meant for a high end graphics card- it wasn't offered with anything more powerful than a GT 545.

I doubt you need a BIOS update for the graphics cards. PCIe graphics cards generally aren't reliant on BIOS updates even if the card is much newer than the BIOS. I'm more worried about the case having enough space and airflow for a higher power card, along with enough space for a higher power PSU.
