Good day

I've been gifted with an HP Elite 8300 sff PC and I'm looking to upgrade the PSU and the GPU. I'm looking at getting a GTX660 GPU but I'm not sure if it will be able to plug into the mainboard. I've opened up the case and I see a slot labelled x16PCI but I can't find a definitive answer on whether it will work.

I'm moving everything to another case so size isn't an issue and I believe I've got the PSU figured out. It's all working with a i5-3470 processor.

Are there any other issues I should worry about? I'm just starting out with building rigs and appreciate any help.

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now...

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers

be sure to look at all the threads here at toms on what you want to do and see how far they got on this

Hi! Sorry to revive something old [ish], but I just now joined to ask which PSU you upgraded to?? I have the same computer (except with an i7-3770).. My graphics are FINE (I threw a Radeon HD 7750 in there: (1GB GDDR5, overclocked from 1150MHz up to 1250MHz mem-clock speed).. found a small form-factor version of it, made by VisionTek -- comes with the adaptable short bracket & everything -- yada yada, it's AWESOME).. But then, you ALSO mentioned, "I believe I've got the PSU figured out." -- I'm currently stuck with a lousy 240W, and can't seem to find a decent PSU that fits in the 8300 Elite SFF. Which PSU did YOU end up going with, &/or what is the most powerful one you've managed to find for it? Usually, I'm pretty good at researching these things on my own, but this one stumps me, so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

EDIT: Oops, nevermind! I just now re-read your original post, about the part where you changed cases, so size doesn't matter to you, therefore you weren't limited to the same problem I'm having.. Perhaps MY ultimate solution will have to be changing cases too.

What kind of case did you buy?
Thank you
