HP EliteBook 8440P max memory. A couple questions.

Hi again everyone! I have the HP EliteBook 8440P that I will be adding a new internal 1T HD to soon, and am now trying to determine how much memory I can get away with installing. The laptop has a 2.8GHz Intel core i7 M640 dual core processor.

Right now the system sits at 4MB in one slot (out of two). Supposedly the machine can only support 8MB (2x4), but has anyone ever installed 16GB (2x8) on one of these and had good results?

Also, I am confused about SATA. For the internal HD, if my current drive is SATA II does it matter if the new drive is SATA 6 or SATA III or whatever?

Max RAM is 8GB. That model doesn't support 8GB SODIMM's.

Doesn't matter on the drive. If you install a SATA 3 drive it'll just downshift to SATA 2.

Boo and hiss on the max ram, but it is what it is I guess. And, good to know on the drive - I just ordered the new one after your response.

One more quick question if you return to this thread - for the RAM can I get away with ordering 2x4 @ 1.35V on a first generation Intel i7 or should I stick with the 1.5V, and is there any benefit between one or the other? I keep reading that the 1.35V will help the computer run cooler, but all of this is new to me.

A quick Google search:

DDR3L is a dual voltage capable memory SoDIMM, which supports operation at both 1.5V and 1.35V. DDR3L is also pin-compatible with DDR3. DDR3 is a single voltage capable memory SoDIMM, which supports 1.5V operation only.

Don't waste money on the low voltage stuff for this laptop, unless you get a good deal on it, this unit only runs at 1.5V.
