Will not load any OS with 8GB RAM
This is a head scratcher.
I have a G72 with 2X2GB DDR3 1333 and I wanted to upgrade to 8GB. I bought 2x4GB 1600. When I installed it, the computer would reboot. BIOS would see all the RAM, but when Windows tried to launch I get the following error:
-------------------Windows recovery error--------------------
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, startup repair can help diagnose the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, chose start Windows normally.
>Launch startup repair
>Start Windows normally
I chose repair and it looks like it does something then reboots back to same screen. I chose start normally and same thing.
So I think maybe there’s something wrong with one of the sticks. First I go back to the original memory and install just one 2bg stick to see if the computer will run on one slot. It does. Then I swap it for one of the new 4gb sticks. It boots into Windows just fine. I swap out for the other single 4gb stick and it also boots into Windows just fine.
Then I try another OS. I download Ubuntu to a DVD and boot to it with one stick. Golden. Both sticks 8GB—No go. Same as Windows…it POSTs, it starts to launch the OS and then just stalls with a curser. No error messages. Just a black screen and a curser top left screen.
Now I’m stumped.
I KNOW the memory is good.
I know both slots are good.
I THOUGHT the laptop could support 8GB according to the documentation. Could it be just plain wrong? Is the slight speed change an issue? (I wouldn’t think so).
Halp!
