HP incompatible ink problem

Well I've seen a bunch of threads about this problem, but it didn't seem like there were any solutions...so I'll give it a try. I have a HP Deskjet 5740, and recently bought some remanufactured ink cartridges. Things were working fine until today, when suddenly I see a message saying "incompatible ink cartridge." Now I can't print anything. Is there a way (besides buying over-priced, genuine HP cartridges - I'm poor) to circumvent this problem? Thanks.

Sometimes even genuine HP cartridges get an error like that; I just had a fairly new genuine HP cartridge stop working and had to get it replaced.

So, it might just be a cartridge that has gone bad and nothing to do with it being refilled.
