2007 HP laptop, With Windows Vista...display not working. Able to connect external monitor and boot into safe mode but not windows. Any suggestions??

I am nothing if not hard headed...knowing this is Windows Vista. Why am I only able to boot into safe mode with external monitor. This laptop has not been moved or opened in over a year. Why I doubt hardware issue. I will open it up and check further. Thanks

Booted into "Safe Mode" and ran system restore to the restore point set a a few days before error occurred. No changes.

If you're not getting any images on your laptop's screen at all but you are when plugged into an external monitor, it sounds like the display is busted. Meanwhile, not being able to boot into Windows seems like a completely different problem to me. Reinstall your operating system if possible, then when/if that doesn't fix your display issues, replace your screen.

Alternatively, get a new laptop. 8 years is a darn good life-span for a laptop. >.<

Like a politician I did the last thing first...bought a new laptop. Have all files backed up so have not lost anything. Bought new hard drive and will install new Vista OS. Thanks for assistance.
