My HP laptop went up in smoke after I plugged it in after not using it for awhile. I opened it up to find out a mosfet burned up. I replaced the mosfet but I still get a short. Where would I test for the short?

Anything dv5 dv6 dv7 series related gives me still nightmares. is it power switch mosfet ? line from dc-in?
Do you have power supply so you could apply voltage to find the short? Its easier this way bad component heats up and you can use isoprophyl alcohol to see which one heats faster thab other

What part is it i can check from schematic what to look for, any liquid damage corrossion anywhere? Are traces still fine how bad it burn?

I'm not quite sure but it used to turn on but it was stuck in a power cycle, the fan would turn on and off, now it doesn't turn on at all. Whenever you press the power button a chip that might be the thermal fuse gets incredibly hot, but still charges unless I put the mosfet back where the burned area is. That gets hot and the charging light flashes for half a second. The laptop has never been in contact with any liquids and I didn't see any corrison. I think it burned either just the top layer or SGND second layer

what was the component, Read near the component on the mainboard example PQ812, then compare to schematic

Look if any usb ported is shorted pins, look connectors for shorted pins on the mainboard. you can rule out that part of the circuit if it boots with battery only connected no power cable, test.
