Hp laserjet 1100 printer driver parallel to usb cable windows 7 32 bit

I have a HP laser jet 1100 that uses parallel port to print. I want to print from a laptop that has usb ports. I've gotten a cable that adapts the Parallel port to usb but cannot print

Does your adapter support bi-directional communications? This is required by the LaserJet.

I had the same problem with my Dell Vostro 3700 laptop and Laserjet 4000 connected to USB port via USB to Parallel interface.
SOLUTION THAT WORKS: add DC powered USB hub and connect printer to one of hub-s ports. Let Windows install drivers for USB cable and printer and print is perfect!

It comes out that laptop's USB ports do not have sufficient current or voltage, particularly if some other USB devices are connected to the laptop...
