I recently acquired a HP LaserJet 4+ with a JetDirect card. I plugged
this into my network and I am trying to print to it with no luck.

IP settings are as follow (I am on a 192.168.1.x network)

HOST NAME: Not Specified
CONFIG BY: User Specified
IP ADDRESS: 192.168.1.20
SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0
DEF. GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1
SYSLOG SERVER: Not Specified
TIMEOUT: 90 sec

It says TCP/IP is ready.

I installed the printer as a local printer and createing a TCP/IP port
for it.

I am also not able to ping the printer (should I be able to?)

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong? Any sites or documentation out
there that could help?

Thanks in advance

You should be able ping the JetDirect card and get a response, just like any
other Ethenet controller.

Did you get these settings from the printer's test page?

Are you running any sort of firewall software? With ZoneAlarm and Norton
firewalls, to name two, you need to tell the firewall software that either the
printer's IP address in in the trusted domain or that the entire 192.168.1.n
domain is trusted.

What operating system(s) are you running?

Can you access the JetDirect setup manually from the printer's control panel?

Have you tried HP's Install Network Printer Wizard? It allows you to configure
a JetDirect (and associated printer), and gives you the choice of configuring by
Ethernet MAC address (useful when JetDirect is in another domain) or current IP
address. It can also search for the JetDirect, but is pitifully slow doing so.

I figured I would be able to ping the printer... just like I can ping
anyother ethernet device. Those settings did indeed come from the test
page, and I set them myself via the printers control panel.

This printer is running on a home network. I have a Linksys WRT54G
Wireless router doing all the DHCP for my home and its a 192.168.1.x
network. Subnet mask and default gateway of the printer are identical
to any other machine on the network. And I have no problem pinging
other machines. Only difference is I gave the printer a static
address. A static address below the starting DHCP range (.100).

I wish to print from Windows XP machines, SP2.

Have not tried HP's Wizard yet, but if I can't even ping the printer,
would it work anyway?

Is there something else I'm missing here?

One thing to note, when I connect the ethernet cable to the printer, I
see the Link/Act light come on, but no activity whatsoever.

Yes, you are right to give the JetDirect a fixed IP address outside the range
provided by the Linksys router. That's exactly what I've done here, and the way
I have set up clients' networks.

Next step: Disable the XP SP2 firewall, and try to ping the printer's JetDirect
again. Unless the JetDirect is just plain broken or the Ethernet cable from
router to printer is bad, betcha the ping will work.

The XP2 firewall is half of a respectable software firewall, anyway. Better to
use ZoneAlarm (free), ZoneAlarm Pro (you pay something), Norton Firewall, or
maybe some other firewall that gives better control over firewall properties AND
warns you when unsuspecting programs try to go OUT to the internet from inside a
computer... Ben Myers

I'd like to add that you may want to check the duplex settings in your
network configuration. Set all cards to auto-detect unless you have very
good reasons to do otherwise. If you do set to manual and there is a duplex
mismatch, network communication might just end up timing out.

Personally, I agree with Ben: It's either the XP firewall or just a broken
network component (cable, jetdirect card).

Does anybody know how to set the duplex setting on this
printer/JetDirect card?

Acutally I found the problem.. I looked at how the printer was
connected to the switch... I had originally plugged it into port 8.
Then looking at it a little closer.. port 8 is shared with the uplink
port. Simply plugging the printer into a different port did the trick.
And now I can ping and print just fine. Thanks for all the help.
