Hi

My wireless router at home has failed. A friend has offered me some kit his work have decommissioned but this is from an office, would it be suitable for home use. It is an HP MSM430 Access Point. I think it will need a PoE switch which isn't a problem, but I'm concerned it will be too powerful for home use?

I have a separate (hacked) huawei 612 vdsl modem which is also the DHCP server and some Ethernet cabling in the house so could this just be added as an AP?

Can anyone advise if it would be OK, I don't want to overpower the neighbourhoods WiFi!

Thanks

WiFi signal levels are regulated by the government. Consumer equipment already transmits at the maximum power in most cases. Generally one of the big features of commercial AP is their ability to set the power to values less than the maximum not more. By default though they likely transmit at the same full power levels.

I do not know anything about those but check to be sure you can actually configure them. Many of these fancy commercial AP are dependent on a extremely expensive central controller to function. I know there are a few models of cisco that are unusable without the controller.

Other than that your plan to use your huawei router with the AP should be ok.
