HP Omen 17 RTX 2080 super.

Hello there,
I am looking for a gaming laptop and I came across this machine:

Which after a student discount is nearly £1800
For the same price I can only get a GE66 Raider with RTX 2070. I like the look of the GE and what it offers but the RTX 2080 Super is far superior.
But i couldn't find any information online about the machine, at least i wanted to find something about thermal performance.
If anyone has any info for this device would love tonhear it as im considering it.

Thermals are reasonable, max 81C which is to be expected on a gaming laptop.

I'd double check that - the gpu thermals are fine, the cpu ones are another story.

That's the previous model with an RTX 2080, not super. But i should expect around the same results?

81C on Prime95 with some CPU thermal throttling is to be expected if that's what your looking at. I don't think I've seen a gaming laptop ever that won't throttle the CPU on stress testing with Prime95. I looked into the testing criteria and it doesn't state the version of Prime95 nor if AVX has been disabled.

Looking at it and the low price would you any of you recommend this config on the Omen? I rarely see Omen laptops getting recommended on forums

It's a good price with your student discount. The reasoning behind the lack of HP recommendations may be due to the massive amount of bloatware they come with which the more thorough way to get rid of it is to do a clean install of Windows 10. Spec wise it should provide a good gaming experience and the Gsync monitor would keep the gaming smooth even if there's dips due to some thermal throttling.

Interesting, I was reading the text from the write up as my screen is too small to clearly see it (work laptop). From the looks of it they stated the average temp, not the actual max temp.

"Now let us take a look at the insides. While the components become relatively warm under load, they do not heat up too much. Both during "Witcher 3" and under maximum load using FurMark and Prime95, the CPU and GPU only heat up to around 80 °C (~176 °F)."

I should of suspected the reported max temp was incorrect. I have a weaker laptop and my temps roam around the 88C range when heavily gaming.

I see a 90C as the highest reported temp.

I don't think notebookcheck is too terrible - there was some small print, and you overlooked it is all.

It's not terrible but saying "it gets to around 80C" but is reaching up to 97C is a bit misleading. It would be more appropriate to say "CPU temps average 81C with some spikes to 97C (or mid 90C's)".
