Hi,
I have a HP Pav A640n X86-64 system that I'm generally happy with
except the slow ass ram (PC2700) Can I install in this machine
PC4000 or PC3200?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

See the specs:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&product=426323&dlc=en&docname=c00064822

or what Crucial recommends:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=HP%2BPavilion+A+Series&mfr=HP&cat=&model=Pavilion+a640n&submit=Go

I'm confused that HP supplied PC2700 DDR in the machine; PC3200 would be
normal for an A64 3400+ CPU. PC4000 ought to work also, although low-latency
PC3200 might be faster unless you're planning to overclock.

HTH.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

There are two primary places you should check for answers to your question:

1st: Read the manual to see if there is any reference to memory support.

2nd: Contact HP Tech support. In my opinion they are very good about
responding to customer questions.

In fact, if you would take the time to go to the HP web site, the answer
to your question is there and very easy to find!!

You can always install faster ram. Whether or not your system will run at
the speed of the ram you install is another question, but an A64 system
should support a 200MHz memory bus (PC3200 speed). I've run my PC3700 ram
at 133, 166, 200, and above. BySPD runs it at 166MHz.

HP says:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?dlc=en&lc=en&product=426323&lang=en&cc=us&docname=c00064822

Crucial gives:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=HP%2BPavilion+A+Series&mfr=HP&cat=&model=Pavilion+a640n&submit=Go

(links may wrap)

The short answer is: yes.

I'm a bit confused, as I thought an A64 3400+ would *require* PC3200 DDR.
I'm not clear on what PC2700 would be doing in your system. (It is possible
that the memory is being run asynchronously, but that would be cheap, even
for HP.)

Unless you intend to overclock, low-latency PC3200 may be a better choice
than PC4000. (For my own use, I'd use inexpensive mundane PC3200.)
