Hi all, an hour of searching and couldn't find definite answer.

The board has a PCIe Graphics card slot but the PSU doesn't have a connector for it.

The motherboard also only has a 4 pin power input for main board power. Which is 12v apparently.

We have a psu with a 4+4 CPU Power Connector plus the appropiate cables to power graphics card.

Can the 4+4 be split and also be used in the atx power socket (assuming it fits) or should some sort of converter be used from molexes? Which i have seen and they do exist.

Or can the +4 from the more traditional motherboard 20+4 be used in this scenario?

What would be best approach here?

Thanks ahead.

Solution
Can the case take a standard ATX power supply? Judging from the picture it cannot.

If not look for a GPU without power connectors. The power supply on that computer is only 180w, not really enough for a GPU with any sort of power connectors.

You max is probably going to be around a GTX 1050/ 1050 Ti that does not have power connectors.

If you want a new PSU, you are going to need a different case and possibly motherboard too.

Your best off just getting a new power supply. Stock power supplies are often made to just be able to power your current system so upgrading the psu will allow the system to work with a more power hungry card.

Sniper, down vote was accident, sorry!

It'll most likely be moved into a more appropiate case to be honest. Currently we've connected the PSU intended to use separately to power the card! Bridged connectors on 2nd psu. Not best solution, but person who bought it for his son was informed it could take a card but not told the PSU is rubbish!

Yeah generally OEM systems are sold with the basics of what it needs to work, nothing more as that is what HP designed the system for.
Yes bridging the connectors will work not a great solution though as you noted. From the one picture I saw of the back of the case it doesnt appear to adhere to ATX PSU form factors so a new case will be needed.

What I don't know is if the motherboard and the rear IO (audio USB etc) will fit properly into a different case as sometimes these boards are purpose built for those systems.

Scouts, we have a decent PSU. But board only has a 4 pin main power input. Question is about options mentioned in OP.

We don't need a new PSU as have a decent one for powering card. Just no clear way to plug into motherboard that only has 4pin main board connection.

In current set up (See above) is running modern games just fine. Just would prefer not to be using 2 power supplies!

Sniper thanks again, he's pretty handy when it comes to fabrication, pretty certain he can "make it work/fit"

It's just how to power it. The Molex converter is appearing to be best option. Unless the 4+4 CPU is 12v which should work if fits.

The most irritating thing about the situation is buying a new rig and being told is upgradeable, knowing taking side off invalidates chance of taking back for refund only to find not really best set up for upgrading !
