im rurbing pc for my uncle. I want to install an E8600 as an upgrade. I have checked HP and intel.ark websites and that is a go. I need to know if I can also upgrade ram to DDR3 from the current DDR2? current ram is 800MHz, where DDR3 is 1333MHz. I believe this is ok, reason: the new cpu has 1333MHz FSB and uses DDR3. also, could I use 8gb instead of the current 4gb max? I have asked in HP Forum and got a canned B.S. answer pointing me to website I had just read. Please help. this is a fathers day gift. thank you all for help.

Yes but the CPU's all the features wont be utilised when you use it in your current motherboard. Like you will still be limited to DDR2 RAM and 800MHz speed.

Sorry bro, your motherboard only supports CPUs upto Core 2 Duo E6xxx series. You cant install any E8xxx CPU in it.
And no you cant upgrade RAM from DDR2 to DDR3 as your motherboard can only have DDR2 memory installed in it. And that is also one of the reason why you cant use E8600 CPU in it, as E8600 is made for motherboards with DDR3 while your motherboard only has DDR2. And no you cannot have more than 4GB because thats the maximum your Motherboard supports.
I suggest you to sell that CPU and buy a new PC for him otherwise I suppose you can do nothing other than just changing the CPU to a E6xxx one. Hope it clears your doubts.

the HP website for that specific MB shows that it is Socket 775, and that the Core 2 Duo E8600 Wolfsdale is compatible. Also, intel.ark shows same info. my problem is the ram. if you change cpu the new bios should then reconfigured MB for the FSB and ram? is that not correct. please advise?

i don't understand this at all. the website says the E8600 is an upgrade to he E2200. now im being told it wont work. WTF, HP wants $60 for out of service just to answer a couple questions. to answer your question, it would be about $50 dollars, no more. I found the CPU on ebay new for $16. I will just buy a new PC before I unload cash for this POS. I will not ever buy an HP. I have a 6yr old dell m6500 that can smoke most new i7's so I know how to build them. I just wasnt sure about this HP toilet water. So let me know, $50 bucks is my send to doody pile limit. thank you for help.
