Hello everyone smarter than me!

I purchased a used laptop several years back, and it gave me no troubles. I did have to replace the battery with a new one a year or so ago, but nothing serious.

Recently it started to fail to turn on immediately after the power button was pressed, often times taking up to 10 different presses before turning on. A few days ago, it stopped turning on entirely.
The power led beside the power input glows when the psu is plugged into the wall. I've tried replacing the small round battery inside the laptop, as that is what a tech at best buy recommended, but to no avail.

The battery is still the same, relatively-new battery I purchased a year prior, and the psu is the one that originally came with the laptop.

I can only assume it's one of a few things- the psu, the battery, or something internal that Im not aware of, such as a motherboard issue.

Can anyone offer any further insight/advice on how to diagnose the problem?

See if your power button is working. That is a cheap fix and your description "...often times taking up to 10 different presses before turning on. .." sounds like a failed button. I am assuming NOTHING happened when you pressed the button and it didn't start, and for the presses that work the PC came up as though you hadn't already pressed the button 10 times.

On a desktop you bypas the power on button by removign teh wire from the MB header. To start the PC without the button you short the pins for just one second then stop shorting them (intermittent switch). On a laptop you'd need to dissassemble the laptop and follow the wire to see what is going on.

If you are willing:

If you are willing:
1. GOto YOUTUBE and watch a bunch of Pavilion dv-4065dx disassembly videos. There are many.
2. Find the power button in the video and see how it is connected to the MB.
3. Decide if you are willing to open the laptop up. If so there are some small tools that make life much easier: This is great https://www.amazon.com/Newer-Tech-TOOLISESAMO-iSesamo-Electronic/dp/B00792JJK4/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1481417212&sr=8-6&keywords=computer+pry+tool Also get some plastic ones. I don't know this set but it looks good: https://www.amazon.com/Repair-Opening-Screwdriver-Electronics-Tablet/dp/B00ATWFZB8/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1481417212&sr=8-9&keywords=computer+pry+tool
4. Open things up and make sure the connection from the power button to the MB is on correctly.
5. Here a video showing someone on a different computer shoritn ghte power pins to get his latoptop started. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6s2h4bQTSA If this is the problem with your laptop then you would want to buy a new power button cable from HP or buy a dead dv-4065dx laptop on ebay and take it's cable.

IF you decide you can't open it and are going to throw the laptop away then try spraying contact cleaner into the switch area. https://www.amazon.com/DeoxIT-DN5-Mini-Spray-nonflammable-solution/dp/B000RGD9PK/ref=sr_1_cc_5?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1481417761&sr=1-5-catcorr&keywords=contact+cleaner+deoxit+spray If that doesn't work take the disk drive out and sell the rest on ebay. A new latop at bestbuy costs $300-$350 so paying a tech to fix this one is not cost effective.
