So one day my computer starts screaming; found out it was the cpu cooling fan. Spayed a little teflon lubricant in it, turned it back on, and so far squeal free.

But in the meantime I ordered a replacement fan to swap. I got one of the same model # PVA080G12Q 12V .65A. What I got in the mail is a 4 wire fan vs 3, I tried it anyway, it spins fine but on starting the computer I get a CPU Fan error, shutting down. I can't even boot to bios to see if there is a setting to change.

Aside from the extra wire, the only difference I can see is the small # on the fan; mine is a -f03-ae the replacement is -P04-ae

Can I make this work, do I need another fan?

Solution
The new fan is made to be controlled with a signal on that 4th wire.

Honestly it should not have given you issues like that(as it should still spin well and ALL pwm fans I have used will work fine of voltage control).

I would connect it to lets say the rear fans place and check how fast it spins compared to the cpu fan. While you are able to boot, you may be able to change a setting in the bios for how low it has to spin for a warning. HP is not known for letting users mess with much in the bios, so it is a bit of a long shot.

No setting in the Bios; fan seems to spin fine for the few seconds it's on. It does take a second to 'spin' up if you will. I already tried another generic 80mm fan; it didn't work either; I just assumed it since it was something like a .2A vs .65A it wasn't fast/strong enough.
Wonder if I need to 'clear' the MB memory some how; trick it into accepting the new fan.

I only tried to start 2-3 times; but I need consistent startup as this PC has my security cam software running.

The reason why you're getting the CPU Fan error is because the BIOS POST routine is looking for a Fan Tach signal operating in the proper range and it isn't receiving it.

4-wire fan connecting to board's 3-pin fan header:
4wireto3pin.jpg

Fan header pinouts:

4-wire fan support
Pin#
1 - Ground
2 - +12 V
3 - FAN_TACH
4 - FAN_CONTROL (i.e. via PWM - Pulse Width Modulation)

3-wire fan support
Pin#
1 - Ground
2 - +12 V
3 - FAN_TACH
N/A - N/A

The FAN_TACH signal may very well be different between the 3-wire and 4-wire versions of the fans.

The board may well be reading right off startup and that slight delay makes things worse.

Strange thing is all fans should use the same fan_tach since it is a standard.

Unless the original fan just was that much faster(HP had to set a low limit(rpm) on the board).

I have not ever had this issue, but always use my own boards. On that note, My old Asus board ran the fan MUCH slower in voltage mode vs pwm(i am talking like 400-500 rpm or lower).

Thanks for the help. I double checked and the wires are the same color to pin as the original, (black, red yellow). I was able to get into the bios with the new fan running. It was running strong & quiet the whole time; bust as soon as I go to normal boot it shuts down.

Since obviously these discount fans aren't going to work; where can I get a fan that the HP will recognize? Now I fear the old fan will fail soon.

If it helps it's an HP Pavilion Elite m9500y

Thanks, HP Part site was no good; & I assume would be $100 if they did have it. I started with a google search; guess I didn't relize the little #'s were going to make a big difference! 🙁 Found another one, says it's the -F03-ae version... we'll see.
Thanks for the help
