My HP dv7 1245dx GPU has failed due to overheating - I only get a black screen, and connecting to an external monitor yields the same result. I am well aware of the lawsuits involving nvidia and HP, and as the machine is past warranty Best Buy, where I bought it, and HP have washed their hands of the problem.

Before I bring it to a competent computer repair service for re-seating GPU, I just wanted to ask the community if there are any troubleshoot / possible quick fix words of wisdom I can do on my own prior to laying down the dosh to get it fixed?

Thanks in advance ~

The only quick fix to try at home, is taking taking apart the laptop, and reflow/reheat with a heat gun the GPU and than the VRAM, google for tutorials (GPU reflow) if you are feeling adventures dude. Of course the whole thing is only a temp fix (like 2-6months) that is if you succeed and you can of course fry you GPU and mobo in the processes! Otherwise take it to a service, they maybe able to replace your laptop GPU if you are lucky.

Thank you kindly - The machine has been sitting for 2 months in it's case. Today I fired it up and it is working like a charm!! techno-miracle! My buddy, who is a software engineer, can only surmise that the contacts somehow reseated, or simply picking up the machine /movement reconnected the faulty contacts. Anyhow, it is up and running just fine. I will get an additional fan, as that is the source of the problem (overheating), so thanks again Bro!
