Hello,
I have had this laptop for the past 4 years and for whatever reason it has started to crash. It states it is a display problem. I updated to Nividia 8600gm and google chrome. When I updated to google chrome it actually helped a bit and then it started again. The computer makes a noise like revving up, starts turning different colours, freezes and crashes. I am a 58 year old female who does not have a clue as to what is going on. I would appreciate any and all help/advice that anyone could give me. Just please be very specific in the steps as I am thick, lol. Thank you in advance.

hiya

the issue your having is the graphics card (gpu) becoming unstable
this can be caused by two things.
no: 1 your graphics driver is corrupted
go to this link http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk
at the top right of the page select your region (i.e usa / canada / europe etc) then fill in the form under option 1 agree to the licence then download and instal the driver then restart. this should solve most gpu issues but if it doesnt then
no:2 the laptop is overheating
therse not much an average user can do about this other than to clean out as much dust as you can from the vent. use a hoover with the thin attachment then goto this link
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/Real_Temp/
download and instal real temp 3.6. and run the program. this will give you the laptop tempratures (mostly cpu) the cpu temp should be between 30-70c but can go as high as 100c if the temp goes over 100 the laptop will shut itsself down. if this is the issue then it can be repaired by opeing it up clearing all the dust and reapplying the cpu thermal paste. DONT attempt this yourself
no:3 the gpu is dying
this unfortunatly is fatal. if the new driver doesnt work and the tepratures are fine then its no simple task to repair and considering the age of the laptop your best bet may be to invest in a new one.

let me know how you get on
