I just got a HP6122 inkjet printer. I'm trying to hook it up to a new Dell
computer. I go through the add a new printer wizard and add the printer
(using LPT1, because I can't find USB). When I go back through properties
and try to change the port to USB, no USB ports show up in the list. All
the LPT and COM ports and other stuff show up, but no USB. The ports do
show up in the device manager - under control panel, system, hardware,
device manager.

Why don't the USB ports show up on the "ports" tab of the "properties" for
the printer?

Any ideas?

If you plug the printer into the USB port and turn on the printer, does the
computer notice that new hardware has been added? (A window should pop up).

Have you ever used them? If not check to see they are enabled in the
machine's BIOS.

if its like other hp printers there is a specific way to install it, they
usually come with a setup guide which has to be followed rigorously or the
setup will not work. You have to install it to a usb port to start with not
to lpt1 and then look for a way to change the port to usb.

Check the following, "Resolving Communication Problems Between Dell Computers
and HP All-in-One Products". While it is written with AIO products in mind it
may also apply to your case:
