HP printer error message: cannot detect printer cartridges

Hello,
Suddenly and without provocation our HP printer is stuck on an error message: print cartridges missing or not detected. But they are there and not low. I've tried everything, that I can think of, including replacing cartridges. Same message. I even looked on HP support site, cannot find any help!
