Try re-installing the print cartridge and aligning it per HP's automated aligning procedure. Unplug and re-plug the printer to reset it.
Thanks, I'll try that. I talked to HP service which said the printer (2004) is obsolete and it's best to buy a new one. For $100 or so, they're probably right, especially since I get a fax with it.

My HP printer PSC 2110 works fine. It is about the same age as your printer. It looks like HP wants to wash their hands off by telling you to buy a new printer.
Anyway, the ink cartridges are the expensive part.
