I have an HP ProLiant server that was working, then I moved it and now it will not power up-when I plug in the power supplies (4) one by one I hear them starting but will not power up, no light on the start button- there is a message code on the motherboard "00"

please advise.

cmarin21,

Sorry you're still having the troubles.

I think the next step is to test the power supplies. I'm not sure of the Proliant 380 G7 configuration, but there is going to be a built in self test for the power supplies. Given the age and heat exposure, it possible that the electrolytic capacitors have "dried up". This happens frequently in the power supplies of vintage audio gear, especially high current vacuum tube power amplifiers. This problem is exacerbated if the power supply has been dormant a long time, and in that case the capacitors have to be reformed by raising the...

cmarin21,

I'm not a server expert, but you might first try detaching all other electrical components from the circuit so that only the 380 G7 is using power. If the system now works, it is overloading the circuit and protectively shutting down as a result of being under-powered.

The idea if there are 4X redundant power supplies, running off a conventional outlet may be exceeding the capacity of a 15A circuit. I think tying two circuits together may solve it. I have a kitchen circuit made with two 15A circuits and even that recently tripped off as from running only a toaster oven, 1250W microwave, and 1500W espresso maker at the same time.

If that's the case, try tying two circuits together and for good measure, change the outlet to a higher-rated hospital grade outlet such as Hubbell or Leviton. Another issue could be the possibility that the power cable is too light a gauge and in that case a heavier gauge power cable leading to a high-rated twist-lock plug and corresponding single plug outlet may be the thing.

Example of hospital outlet:

New Leviton RED HOSPITAL GRADE LEV-LOK Receptacle Duplex Outlet 20A 125V M8300-R > $10

I use hospital outlets for all computers and audio gear, and for computer CPU's and vacuum tube preamps, also an isolation transformer power conditioner such as Powervar and OneAC.

The high current draw is the only issue I can think of that would explain that moving the system alone caused the problem.

Here's hoping it's the simplest thing!

Excellent, I did try a different outlet but it was on the same circuit- I will try tonight and let you know-
When I had the server at home it was running- when I moved it to my clients office it just did not want to power up- you'd think that their outlets would be ready for such power.

Thank you !

Typically, because of the limited market, this kind of server power supply is not terribly expensive to replace:

HP 490594-001 Proliant G6 G7 DL360 DL380 1200W MAX Power Supply 498152-001
> $59.75 or offer

There may be other HP servers using the same specification PS and HP might provide a list.

That could potentially add up at times four, but it's quite possible it's only a single one which the BIST would identify.

There is a quite active set of forums at HP and you would find more specialized knowledge there. The one I visit is workstation oriented, but there are often server questions:

Let me know what you find out.
