Hello i bought this server and have not since been able to get it to run an operating system. First i tried to install ubuntu desktop version but it got some errors even before the install button appeared. Next i tested a turnkey based version of linux called MineOS and that worked, Next i tried linux mint mate 14 but that returned with could not start the x server (during installation) and i was unable to fix that. then i tried ubuntu server and that installed but upon the reboot after install all i got was a blank screen. I tried the ubuntu boot repair but the live cd version of that did not work, it just gave a blank screen. then i retried MineOS but that gave me bad sector errors prior the install. then i retried the ubuntu desktop but it had an error about reading the disks. the disk are still in the raid1 that it came set up as. Please help, if i cant get this working i will be returning it.

Hard drives are raid1, seller said system works good

You cannot get any Linux (consumer-oriented) distro and expect it to run on business-class server with specific storage.

Search for "HP Proliant Linux Support". You will find several HP pages describing what will work, and how to enable it. In most cases, this means installing RHEL, or SUSE.

You can run any operating system on it as i was trying to run ubuntu server which is designed to be run on this kind of hardware. but i just have been unable to get mine to work.

but i will try gentoo.

then i tried ubuntu server and that installed but upon the reboot after install all i got was a blank screen.

A totally blank screen? Nothing at all? Ubuntu server edition does not install a desktop. You can install it after the fact though by typing sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop or any of the other desktops you wish.
