I have a Proliant Gen6 chassis that I would like to recycle but I can't seem to find a start point on what's possible.

Can anyone offer some guidance on how to modernize a server like this? It has 2 huge 1200w power supplies which gives me all kinds of possibilities from a power perspective but I don't understand what motherboard I could use and maintain some/most of the internals.

That's an old server (note: Server NOT Workstation). It's at least 12 years old and no longer supported by HP. Without an HP service contract, which you can't get on anything this old, it's basically useless as there is no access to things like firmware updates and such. Better to simply scrap it. Nothing of the internals are usable elsewhere and you can't fit anything else in that proprietary case.

Are you saying a new motherboard wont be possible? By new, I mean something more updated, perhaps 3-5 years on market. If that is not, then I would agree.

I think I am going to convert it to a JBOD and remove the motherboard altogether. I probably need a couple of adapters.

The two power supplies are redundant, so you still have a 1200W budget.
The top processor that HPE shows for that model is the Opteron 2435 (2.60GHz/6-core/6MB/75W) and you can configure two of them.
HPE shows support for 128GB RAM.
I guess it depends on what configuration you have now, as to what upgrades are available.
There is NO "modernization" option. Server chassis are very specific on hardware support.
