Hp tower keeping original CPU but swapping motherboard

Hi all,
I have a HP pavillon HP8-1226
(specs here) and recently bought a EVGA nvidia gtx780, My motherboard is not compatible with the card (found out the hard way 🙁 ). My question is can I use my current CPU with the purchase of a new compatible motherboard? Any info on which motherboard I could buy that would be both compatible with my current CPU and the graphic card is appreciated.

Presumably Windows was pre-installed on your HP when you bought it?

In that case, if you change the motherboard you will also have to purchase a new copy of Windows.
The existing Windows is permanently tied to the existing motherboard.

Yup, it was pre-installed. I would get a new windows with the motherboard. I am trying to figure out whether I can switch the CPU on to the new motherboard and which motherboard to buy hehe
