HEY! That should come in handy!... For the 3 people who buy windows 8 devices!

Nah just joking!, Windows 8 On A Traditional Laptop (Not This) Is What Will Suck The Most.

8 RTM doesn't have that many apps yet though so that may be a issue.

Unless their "unique" intellectual property is allowing it to print directly to my hp printer (via wireless network) than I doubt it will offer anything of interest.

8RTM has tons of apps as it will run any x86 software. 8RT is the one that is shot in the head waiting to be berried before it is even born.

Sadly in the tablet space, all you need to do to have "unique technology" is be able to make a stable unit capable of more than just media consumption.

[citation][nom]digiex[/nom]Well, That "Unique" technology was already patented by Apple. Wait for the lawsuit.[/citation]

I am sure even if its not they will some how find some way to sue.... looking at the tablet its rectangle so there for its a copy of the I-Pad According to Apple.

[citation][nom]innocent bystander[/nom]I'm sticking with the Surface Pro... It seems the most promising and a good laptop replacement.IB[/citation]

If your laptop has a 10" screen and costs around $1000, then yes, it is a good laptop replacement.

I was thinking the same in the beginning, but I wouldn't be so sure about that: Keep in mind that it's just a matter of compiling the project for the right platform. From a developper's perspective, the development tools and the source code are the same. If you've developped something for the x86 or x64, you can re-compile it with little effort to make it work for another processor type. There are many Windows developpers out there and a strong marketplace that takes care of distributing/selling their applications has been the been missing block for a very long time.
The RT version will only be a problem for the people running older applications that are no longer supported or improved.
I think Windows 8 tablets may become very popular : this is the kind of tablet where we'll be able to run things like Lightroom, Powerpoint, use our favorite PC apps and be able to print just as we used to print (the methods for printing with iOS and Android are an absolute joke. It's just not part of the system so you can only print web pages or PDF files !).

Windows 8 will not suck on the desktop or laptop as nothing has changed that much. They've moved from square icons/shortcuts (Yes they are square) to tiles. What a MASSIVE difference!

Yeah. I mean, if Surface RT costs $200 (let's say about $250 here), it would be great for someone like my mom who just checks email, does a google search or two or browses youtube.

Marketing Desperation FTL

Most new products are "unique" in one way or another... even laundry detergent makes such claims. HP Marketing group should be embarrassed

As a rumor is going around that the WART Surface will sell for $200, rather than $400~500 for a typical 10" tablet... why and how?

- If this is a rumor that is false MS pulls a fast one and releases a 7" model... why $200? Because they are in a bad position compared to iPad and Android. They'll need to sell it at a loss to gain market share. After all, if Joe-Blow looks on the shelf and sees a $400 iPad2, a $300 iPad-mini, a $200 Nexus7 and a 10" Win8 tablet for $200... which would the person buy first?

Remember how the HP touchpad sucked in sales? Oh yeah, HP wanted $500 for a half-baked tablet... when they sold it for $100, everyone was sold out in hours... becoming the #2 tablet in the world... for a while. HP sold it at a loss, better something than to bury them in the desert.

The Build Of Materials costs of the iPad2 is $245. So I think we can expect about the same price for the MS WART tablet. If MS sells a 10" tablet for $200, it *WILL* sell.

Lets say MS sells 1 million units in 2 months, That would be a $45million loss, BUT that would be better than trying to sell 200,000 units at $400 in 4~6 months. History: after 30+ days on the market, Best Buy might have sold 25,000 HP Touch pads (not including returns) - they had 270,000 in stock...

The $45million loss is a drop for MS... and also cheaper than costly AD campaign for a dead-last tablet that most people wouldn't want to buy anyway. If those buyers end up using the APP store to buy books, music and apps - then the loss could bring them closer to black. Nexus 7 is expected to hit 1 million any week/day. Also remember, MS paid Nokia $250million to deal with the failed WP7.

So... I would say, this is genius of MS to do this, they can afford to do this. If sales tank for the WART platform, developers and shoppers will stay away. So, they sell it for a loss (XBOX360 anyone?) for future earning. Once they hit a few million units on the market, they can raise the prices up, grow the market normally.

That said, I hope MS retails at $400 for the 10" tablet. Their partners won't be making any money at $200 or $300 MSRP... unless MS is ALSO paying them. Guess we'll know if 2 months, eh?

Dude, you can already do that with any Windows PC / laptop / tablet to ANY printer attached to your network
...
What would be fantastic is if the tablet has a dual-boot for Windows 8 Pro and WebOS, keeps everyone happy

Yeah, Apple patented unique technology years ago.
