so i am looking to buy hp z220 xeon 1240v2 with 8 gb ddr3 1600 mhz ram and sapphire radeon hd 6850,
just need a fast pc to respond and will do some gaming on low resolution like 480p i will update the card to r9 270 or some thing and 8 gb more ram for future but for now is it good?
and one more thing it have delta force 400w psu with 6 pin connector the specs of pc are xeon 1240 v2, 160gb sata 7200 rpm, dvd rw, 8 gb ram 1x 4gb, sapphire radeon hd 6850 standard keyboard and mouse is this psu is enough?

i will upgrade the hard disk but can i play on low to medium settings on these specs?

seeking1,

The z220 is a unconventional choice for gaming but as they were used for 3D modeling, which has a similar emphasis to gaming on the single-thread performance, there's a good possibility it will meet a reasonable expectation. The Xeon E3-1240 v2 is 4-core@ 3.4 / 3.8Ghz and after all, 3.8GHz is 3.8Ghz.

The Xeon E3-1240 v2 has an average Passmark CPU mark of 9215 and the important Single Thread Rating is 2038. I've done complex 3D modeling on systems with a ratings of under 1700. In the HP z220, the top CPU rating though is 9610, which means a STR of about 2400. For comparison, the i7-3770K, an unlocked gaming 3rd generation i7 CPU has an average CPU mark of 9549 and single thread of 2084 and the i7-4790, one of the top gaming CPU's of the 4th generation, has an average STR of 2286. The i7-7700K produces the top single thread rating of any ever made and on Passmark, there are 98of 2478 ( i7-7700K system running CPU scores under 9600. that's not many- 4%, but the fact that there is any overlap in that performance is significant.

If the top z220 /E3-1240 v2 can equal the average i7-4790, and has a performance rating overlap with the fastest CPU ever, my conclusion is that with a good GPU, and SSD, the z220 /E3-1240 v2 should run games quite well. -And probably quietly.

Also, no guarantees it will be effective, but you might try the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and mildly overclock the E3-1240 v2. Using IET, we are running a Xeon E5-1660 v2 (6-core @ 3.7/4.0GHz) at 4.2GHz on all cores in an HP z420, producing an STR of 2324, where stock is 2098.

If you experiment, run HWMonitor on the side and watch the temperatures carefully. The HP z-series though do have good cooling typical for their workstations. You might try 4.1GHz on the first core and 3.6 on the other 3 cores or 3.9GHz on all cores- that kind of thing. IET has it's own test and dsiplays if their is thermal throttling. As you try higher speeds, add a bit of voltage for stability. Again watch temperatures. There is an IET result for the E3-1240 v2 that is running all cores at 3.8GHz at stock voltage.

As another experiment, independent of overclocking, try turning off hyperthreading in BIOS.

Add a 250GB SSD and Western Digital Blue 1TB

For the GPU, consider a used GTX 950.

Our office has four HP z-series workstations (2X z420 + 2X z620) and these have had good performance and complete reliability under stressful loads.

Cheers,
