Hi All,
I am planning to get a refurbished HP z800 for the following:
1) To use as my primary desktop driving dual monitors e.g. Dell U2415
2) As a NAS server with redundant storage e.g. in RAID 1 configuration.
3) I would also like to use it to host my personal cloud e.g. running owncloud.
4) I would like to use it for running multiple virtual machines simultaneously. E.g. for running a virtual hadoop multi node cluster to analyse big data(tens of GBs) sets.
5) Lastly, a bit of gaming, scientific computing and 3D rendering.

I am looking for a setup that would last me around 3 years atleast.
Here is the configuration I have in mind:
2x xeon 5650
96GB RAM
256GB SSD
2 3.5" WD Red drives
Wireless network card
USB 3.0
NVIDIA Quadro K1200
Would the above configuration meet my requirements?
Would it be possible to achieve it around £1200?
Are there any other machines which can meet the requirements within my budget?
Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

@kanewolf, I plan to connect the devices that need to be backed via USB 3.0 to the z800. As I will be using the z800 at home, I am not sure what else can be done. Better ideas are always welcome :)

Ethernet cable would be the BEST answer. After that AV2 powerline network adapters or MoCA coax bridges. Either of those can provide 200Mbit throughput. WIFI will be lucky to get 100Mbit.

Thanks @kanewolf. The plan is to connect the z800 which is going to be on the first floor with the Wifi router on the ground floor wirelessly for internet access. I have a couple of other laptops which will be connected to the z800 via USB 3.0 whenever they are going to be backed up. I am not sure there is much utility in connecting the z800 with the laptops via Ethernet as I don't need them to be backed up automatically. Any feedback on the rest of the configuration?

I don't know that you will be very happy gaming on a K1200. You will need PRO version of Windows to support dual socket. Windows server does not game well. You didn't specify what hypervisor/virtualization you were planning on using.

I have no insight on a virtual hadoop installation. You will probably be bandwidth limited if you use the HDD.

I have no idea if you can achieve your budget.
