Hello

Details
I've been looking into updating a Z600 workstation motherboard that is slowly dying and upgrading it to a Z800 board.

I currently have x2 Xeon X5660 CPU's and 48GB ram to put into a live board.
I also have a GTX 960 4GB, 4 HDD, 2 SSD, 1 KW Cooler Master PSU from a gaming system that just died in transit "moving country"
This PC is a hybrid for work, servers, environment training and gaming.

Issue
The main issue I am seeing is using a standard desktop power supply and mounting the board into an E-ATX case.

  • Power Problem
Though the 1KW psu I have is not the issue, from what I have read the HP z800 uses a HP designed PSU which is different from your typical PSU.

I was wondering what the best solution around this would be.

  • Case modification
I've also read that this board being design for a HP z800 case has tailor motherboard to case mounting.

How difficult can it be to modify a case to take this board?
I have plenty of time and patience to put towards this, and possibly the tools...

Any assistance / tips / advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can get a compatible standard EATX Motherboard that takes your hardware .. no need to get HP Z800 motherboard ..

just buy standard EATX case , and look in Ebay for the same mobo butt Standard EATX , and install everything

I will look for best Mobo that takes your CPU , Memory and workstation gimme a sec

Why dont you just use the original 650 watts power supply ? gtx 960 will work without problems you dont need to change the power supply for this card.

It is going to be a lot of work to get that into a a normal aftermarket case and aftermarket PSU. Sounds like it could be a fun project though.

For the power. The only difference is that the HP Z800 motherboard uses a different pin layout. A normal aftermarket PSU will work, but you are going to have to do some work to the cables.

And no, it will not fit in a normal ATX or even EATX case. If your case is large enough to fit the board, you will have some work to do to screw it down.

Also, you should know that the fan headers on the Z800 motherboard are not standard and will not work with normal 3 pin fan connectors. I would just replace all the fans with aftermarket fans that have 4-pin molex connectors so you can hook them right to the PSU.

This has been done before, so it is doable. This is good write up by someone who has done it before: http://goo.gl/wvLRgH

The original 650 watt psu is designed specifically for the HP z600 case I currently have and does not meet the power requirement for upgrading all of my components, and I have a spare 1KW psu sitting around to use.
