Hello there,
I just bought a z820, which I need to upgrade the rams on it.
I found 64 (4x16) GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz ECC REGI MEMORY. The seller clearly states that these are only for server memory.
Will they work on my Z820? Is server memory just a name to say that the ram are ECC?
I am bit lost between buffered/unbuffered, ECC/non-ECC, Registered/Un-registered.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Solution
Yes. ECC RAM will work good in your PC.

ECC is a error correction RAM. its mostly used in motherboards which has a server processor socket. like Xeon.
its mainly used in systems which have to lots of extreme calculations work.
but the price is not a big difference. its almost equal to a normal DDR3 RAM.

i have checked the specification of your PC. i think you PC motherboard can support up to 16 GB only.
it looks like 16 GB per PC. and it can hold up to total of 512GB RAM including the all connected PC in server.
you can check with that before purchasing the RAM.

Yea I know that ECC are the preferred ram for the hp z workstation. However, I was confused with the term "server memory". Are the "server memory" and the ECC memory exactly the same thing just different terminology?
I emailed the seller and he just replied telling me that it won't work for the hp z820.
this is the link for the rams: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAMSUNG-4x16GB-64GB-total-PC3L-12800R-DDR3-1600-REGISTERED-ECC-M393B2G70BH0-yk0-/371281390917?ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123
The hp z820 can take up to 512gb (32gb x 16) for the dual cpus.
The term "server memory" is confusing me but apparently it wont work for my system, now I'm lost what type of memory I should get.

Yea I was just googling the subject. Apparently my system can go with many configurations: (http://isvpatch.external.hp.com/HPPTF2/drvlib/docs/Z820_Memory_Configurations.pdf)
- 2/4gb unbuffered ecc
- 4/8/16 registered ecc
- 32
So technically if I want to increase the capacity, I need to switch to registered. It allows for more memory. Also I can't mix between the two.
if anyone is interested in the details;
- here is a link for the types of ram: http://stores.ebay.com/GeeK-NoiZe-Memory-and-More/RAM-Types-Explained.html
- here is a link for the difference between registered and unbuffered :http://www.servethehome.com/unbuffered-registered-ecc-memory-difference-ecc-udimms-rdimms/

Very informative straight-to-the-point links.

I also opened the workstation and checked the rams, it is 16x2GB unbuffered ECC 10800.

Anw thanks rkumaran for the input! Much appreciated.
