HP2610 scanning problem with windows 7

I've downloaded the full software installation kit from HP and installed it in my laptop running windows 7 OS. The printer was successfully installed and the scanner seems ok. When I try to use the scan feature the Photo smart essentials opened and ask me where to send the pix / docs that i am about to scan. When I hit the scan button the scanner has no reply, there is no error message that displayed too. Please help I've been trying to fixed this error for weeks now.

when you installed the software, did you turn all of the security off first? like antivirus and firewall?
What I found, besides the security blocking the installation, is that the downloads don't work. HP has the 7 software on a disk, but you have to pay for it. That may be the only way to get good software.
another trick was to change the compatibility mode of the software to windows 98, or whichever setting caused it to run correctly.
