Hratli has simply disappeared

Hello everyone,

I'm currently playing Diablo II with the expansion package, version 1.10.
I'm developing three different characters more or less at the same time: an
assassin, a druid and a necromancer. I play a little bit of the game with
one character, then catch up with the other two. I play solo, by the way,
not online.

I've run into a little problem that, for all I know, may have game-ending
consequences. I've just begun Act III with all three characters. Hratli, the
smith, is the first NPC I talked to. I was looking forward to buying some
neat stuff from him during Act III. Unfortunately, for some reason, he has
now disappeared. I figured it was just a glitch and rebooted the game, but
he was still gone. Then I tried another of my characters, and it turns out
that he's gone from all of my games. He's not at the docks or anywhere else
in he city. Maybe a file got corrupted or something, I don't know.

I find this very troubling. Besides the annoyance of not being able to use
his services for reparing my equipment and buying items from him (I can
always sell what I find to someone else, like Ormus), there's the fact that,
if I remember correctly (having played Diablo II before), he has a role to
play in one of the quests, though I don't recall what it is exactly. Is it a
mandatory quest? If so, is there any way I can convince the game to bring
back Hratli? Is this a terminal bug that will prevent me from completing the
game? I would be very disappointed if I had to quit and start over, but it's
better to know now than to waste my time playing a few more hours only to
find out I can't go on without Hratli.

I'd be very grateful for any info. Thanks!

Francois

This always happens, you'll find that Hratli returns to her
blacksmithing spot in the south of the city after you do a bunch of the
quests for that act.

My spouse is a bit ahead of me in Act IV and when I got to Kurast she
also said Hratli will disappear and he did, but I finally found him at
his shop, as described above. My wife went the whole act without
repairing her stuff, and she is a close-up character who gets hit a
lot.

Didn't Hratli also say he imbues stuff for you? I never see that
option, but I remember him saying that in his introduction.

<snip Hratli missing from spawnpoing>

Hratli initially greets you at the spawnpoint, but later on, he can be found
at a pier at the northeast side of town. Go to Ormus, then walk southeast to
Natalya, then walk northeast up the pier to Hratli.

You can use the waypoint to return to former acts, you only have to
click onto the taby on the top of the waypoint menu. this would take
you to Fara or Charsi, to have your weapons repaired.

He says it indeed, but for an unknown reason, the only person to imbue
items (and only once per difficulty and character) is Charsi.

Ah, Information. A property, too valuable these days, to give it away,
just so, at no cost.

Since we're (somewhat) on the topic of the purpose of certain NPCs, perhaps
someone could shed some light on Natalya's role in Act III.

Man, do I ever feel stupid! You're right, Hratli has indeed moved to his
store, which makes perfect sense. What makes this even worse is that I've
played through this game twice in the past, and now I do remember visiting
him in his store dozens of times. I really should have known about this.
Does he mention his store in his introduction speech? If he does, I skipped
over it (having played the game before I find listening to the NPCs again to
be rather boring), which makes me feel even more foolish about the whole
thing.

I thank the people who replied for their help, and I apologize for bothering
you with such a silly issue.

Lol, that's true. I am on the last quest and she has nothing to say or
do. I guess she's just cool and stuff. Maybe the designers had to meet
a quota in Act III and include her.

The story I heard was that she was supposed to be a quest-giver, but
they replaced her quest with another one (the Gibdim?) and left her in
town anyway.
