HTC M8 detects headphones plugged in even though its not

My phone shows that my headphones are plugged in even when its not. This causes a lot of problems as I can't hear any audio from the phone speakers and can't attend calls without putting it on loudspeaker. My only solution is to find some earphones and plug it in for a second and remove it. Yet is detects them a few minutes later, making me repeat the process again. I'm not sure if this is a software issue or a hardware issue. I have even cleaned the headphone jack several times. Please help fix it as I couldn't find any relevant answers for this.

I've just noticed that the headphones logo appear whenever I switch on my wifi or mobile data.
