Hi,
For over a year i've been playing recent games without any problem i've finished even some like (res 7 &8, evil within...), I'm lately having a huge drop in fps, wich make the games unplayable (stutturing and lagging), the stats show a 99% of gpu usage then it drops to almost 0% and the game freezes, i have an xps laptop with an i7 7th generation cpu and Gtx 1050 4gigs as a gpu and 16gigs of ram.
I really appreciate someone's help on the matter.

What is the GPU and CPU temp value while gaming ? Any signs of overheating ? Also, since you have a Laptop, always reinstall/update any of the drivers, firmware, and/or even the system BIOS, directly from the OEM product's support page. Which is DELL/Xps in your case.

Have you also tried doing a clean format of the OS as well, by doing a fresh reinstall ?

What normally happens before this issue, what graphic quality do you usually play at ? Your hardware is pretty old, my best guess is a driver issue so its best to give those an update.

If the weather has got much hotter that will or can have a direct knock on effect with PC cooling even in a big tower case compared to the cooler months so a laptop will most likely be effected even more.

Just make sure there is ample room at the bottom and rear/sides or where ever it pulls cool air and vents hot, try one of those laptop cooling pads might help.

I usually play on low for the most graphic settings some of them are on medium; i uodated all my drivers and checked my bios version wich is the last one, i'm really stuck here; those are my nvifia state while playing "the dark picture anthology"

Yes, i already updates everythings i also checked my bios version wich is up to date; i'm really stuck here, those are my state while playing "house of ashes"

gpu util = 0% ? is that while its running the game because if so it's not using the gpu?

Yes, i thought maybe it's using the other one, or the nvidia gpu is not getting power, i also noticed that the fan doesn't work the fan speed is at 0 !!

other what?

try turning the resolution and setting up in the game to medium just to see if GPU util goes up.

I turned up a little the graphoc setting and i opened up the laptop and cleaned the fans a little, now i can play a little smoother bur not same as i was i still have some stuttering though, i'll buy some thermal past tomorrow and replace the old one and will see....

also look in to maybe getting a laptop cool pad if you can, that will help keep it cooler in the hotter months

the laptop will run better for longer if the cool pad is half decent and does the job it's designed to do.

I don't know if Toms Hardware has done any reviews on Cool Pads for laptops to test from best to worst?

not sure if this applies these days but when i used to I play around with sli 2x nvidia gpu's you could enable and disable it

In your Nvidia driver settings

Click the Manage 3D Settings link in the left menu. Under Global Settings, scroll down until you find the “SLI performance mode” entry. Change the settings from “Single GPU” to “Alternate Frame Rendering 2”. This will turn on SLI mode for all of your programs

If it's already on you could try turning it off because it does not always play nice with every game

It might be something as simple as that.

Late update;
I've done everything as you said and nothing; some youtuber advised that i disable turbo boost, wich it did improve somehow the fps but after little while the stutther was back; i run gpu and cpu stats via msi afterburner and i found that my gpu power was 0, no juice is getting to the gpu; the gtx 1050 can goes up to 75 watt when gaming, so i assume that all this time i was playing on the integrated intel gpu wich explain the huge drop in performance.

Can the iGPU be disabled in the Bios? so the gtx 1050 is the primary post device?

also in windows make sure the gtx1050 is set to primary display device.

I Already disabled the igpu from the device manager panel under device display option, but the fps drop worsned even more....

look in windows and see if you can change the primary display card?

not by disabling the card in system manger but in display setting within windows.

I've set my gtx as default like you said, but nothing changed, i ran days gone a game that i played perviously without problem and it was stutturing like the others, my question though is normal for a laptop gpu to have 0.0 watts when running a game ?!

You should be aware that Afterburner specifically states that mobile GPUs are not supported.

What this means is that while basic functionality should work fine (e.g. seeing framerates in games), any hardware polling/adjustment (like voltages, power, overclocking) will be hit-and-miss. Seeing "0W" could easily mean that AB doesn't recognize the GPU so isn't even querying for a value.

*

I would guess that the fan not running could be the reason (and not the symptom).

Try and see if the fan runs at all under various loads.

If not, either
  • the fan cable has gotten disconnected (doubtful); or
  • the fan has failed (not a surprise since it's an old thin-and-light that has been used for gaming).
If you conclude that the fan has died, you can order an exact replacement by part number from ebay. (Be prepared to wait, since most sellers will be in China.)

In addition to Dell's support pages, I'd recommend also checking out iFixit's repair guides and teardowns. They probably have them for your laptop model, it being an XPS.

Thanks for the help, but the fans are working i can hear them while playing, note that while quiting the game the laptop drop drastically in performance and i need to restart it so it can be back to how it was.

I'm sorry I am out of idea's, I don't really have much experience with laptop hardware, maybe or hopefully there will be someone in the forums who can assist you further.

Have you ever cleaned the fans and fin stacks? Laptops tend to clog up from dust - especially if used on cloth surfaces such (e.g. bedspread, carpet). If you don't want to take the laptop apart, you can use compressed air and get most of it .

Also, does your laptop have more than one fan? If so, make sure all of them are running by inspecting visually or by airflow. If one has failed, the remaining one could run at max speed and make lots of noise, while not really being able to properly cool the "other side" of the system. CPU and GPU are usually mostly cooled by their own setups, with some limited balancing between them.

*

Some of this sounds like the Nvidia driver is crashing, leaving you with just the iGPU.

I'd suggest cleaning out all traces of all Nvidia drivers (past and present) with a third-party tool called Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU), before manually reinstalling. There are plenty of tutorials online on how to do it - just try to find a recently dated one.

In Optimus settings make sure you have games set to use the discrete GPU.

Seeing as your laptop is getting on in years, another reason why it might be overheating is if the thermal compound has dried up. I've seen intermittent crashing on some old desktop (Nvidia) GPUs where I fixed it by re-pasting.

Try to find some way to track the GPU temperatures, and if they're high and the driver is crashing, this could be the reason.

Disassembling a laptop to reapply thermal paste is on another level compared to a desktop GPU, though. Especially the thin ones are finicky.
