Huge PSU vs "Big Enough" PSU

Hi Guys,

I'm building a new PC and got on the PSU step right now.

Using the PSU Calculator, it tells me that my system will be using 760w and recommends me to buy a 850w psu.

Looking in the online shops, i've choosen the corsair rm850x, it has a ok price for me and it will deliver enough power, on the other hand, I saw that the evga 1200 p2 is like 15% expensivier.

I've seen the PSU tier list, and know that this corsair is a tier 2 gold and the evga is tier 1 platinum, but is it worth this 15% more? and is there any good use a such big psu since i'll "never" be using it's total power?

Thanks!

PS.: I've seen that rm850i is tier 1 and better.... but I can't find any local shops with it on stock right now.

Aw sorry,

I'm not going to lie, I've kinda overestimated my needs in order to do not have to surprises in the future, but basically:

i7 6700k @ 4.8Ghz
4x8gb ddr4 rams
1 sata 7200 rpms hd
1 ssd
1 m.2 ssd
2 gtx1080
...and some other stuff like led strips, a 240mm WC, etc

Look, I dont own these stuff yet, this is a long upgrade/build plan. xD and that's one of the reasons i'm was choosing one 850w psu.

1) 4.8GHz may not be possible. Frankly I wouldn't push it that high even if I could.

About 200W for base system at 4.6GHz though: http://www.corsair.com/en/blog/2015/august/overclocking_i7-6700k

2) 225W is probably the max for each GTX1080 (ignore most of the little, thin spikes):
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-pascal,4572-10.html

3) 200+ 225 + 225 = 650W

(plus some other stuff, but the CPU at 100% and both GPU's stressed fully isn't going to happen much, if ever)

So...
At least 850W.

A quality 850W is likely just fine. Like an EVGA G2 or similar.

*Make sure your power supply has the proper connectors. Some of the GTX1080's have ridiculous PCIe connections. I know one has an 8-pin and a 6-pin, and some may have more than that... (whether it needs the power or not).

The EVGA 1000W P2 is my top choice. Good review:
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/SuperNOVA_P2_1000/11.html

It has a TEN YEAR WARRANTY.

*PCIe connectors:
6x (6-pin +2-pin), and
2x 6-pin

**Finally, it has an ECO MODE switch to disable the fan below a certain wattage (and temp?).

Summary:
Based on the total COST of your entire build, I'm not sure I would fret too much about a bit more money on the power supply, but if budget really is that tight then maybe THIS one instead:

Ha! Funny you sending me a link from the shop I was looking into. XD
So, RM1000X and no worries about evga or the rmi model?
