Hello. I'm just going to cut to the chase because backstory seems to be unnecessary. I can be running a game with a constant frame rate of over 100fps, but as soon as I start recording from on-system software the fps drops to under 10fps. I think it could have something to do with my hard drive speed but I have done a test of recording onto and off of an external hard drive( which is basically an SSD) and still no solution to the frame drop. Also note that I am unable to use NVIDIA shadowplay because I dont have 4gb VRAM. Here is my system:
CPU: intel i5 4690k
GPU: GTX 960 2gb ssc
MOBO: ASRock z97 Pro4
HDD(s): 160gb 5400rpm drive ; 750gb 7200rpm drive
RAM: 16gb DDR3 1333mhz ram

If you need more info just let me know. Thanks.

Shadowplay runs just fine on my 2gb 650,at what resolution are you playing/recording?
Although your 960 should be able to handle pretty much anything.
Which "on-system software" are you referring to?

I play at 1920x1080p. And I thought that shadowplay was only available with graphics cards with 4gb of VRAM. I have tried recording with fraps, dxtory and obs

OBS can use nvenc(shadowplay) and quick sync(intel iGPU) both of those should only slightly affect your FPS.
You can also set the priority in OBS if it messes with your game.
But shadowplay is the one with the smallest footprint you should really use this one.
