I've been noticing that I've been a bit low on hdd space lately so I loaded up windirstat. Everything looked normal, until I noticed a huge 32 gb file categorized as "<unknown>". Also, every time I check the file, it's a different size and it's also hidden by windows preventing me from accessing it. Anyone know what's going on here? Windirstat glitch? or a serious problem.

Version of Windows?
Could be system restore files, Index files, Page file.....
Have you tries Windows Explorer with hidden files turned on.

Judging by your windows borders I'm assuming your running windows vista. My guess is that it's your temp folder. Mine blew up to about that size, even after running disk cleanup I couldn't account for the 30 gigs of space missing. I sure wish there was a way to limit the size of the thing.

manual delete all files in the temp and prefect folder.
temp: c:/documents.../username/appdata/temp
i pulled that out of my head so you might need to explore a bit, also helps if you turn on hidden files & folders
