I must say that I was disappointed with the results of the new Samsung panel that was reviewed. When the 172X (173P in the US?) was announced this summer it sounded like everything I was hoping for. It was reported to be a 24-bit screen with 16.7 million colors and 16ms response times all wrapped up in the most attractive bezel I've seen. Now after waiting several months and finding that it's all show and no go, I'm back to square one.

Since HyDis appears to be the clear leader in panel technology I will be looking to unclutter my workspace with one of their products. I decided to checkout their website to see if there was any exciting news. They have the specs on what I assume is the panel used by Hercules (HT17E12 with 20ms response time) and a new panel that was scheduled to begin production in the 3rd quarter (HT17E13 with 16ms response time). So here are my questions:

1. I'm not a big fan of the Hercules bezel, is anyone else using the same HyDis panel in their monitors?

2. Is there any news on if or when we'll be seeing the HT17E13 panel in any new monitors?

3. Is the Samsung 173P the US version of the 172X, and if not, is it using the same panel?

I am wondering the same. Which monitors uses the HyDis panel?. I like the SHARP LL-T17D4 and it's claim to be a 20ms panel but I don't know if it is the HyDis panel or not.

Anyone can confirm this?

thanks.

This is similar to a question I was going to ask. My lovely 22" CRT just died and I figure if I am going to upgrade I am going big and get a 17" LCD.

The best one I cold find (Or cant find) is the Hyundai Imagequest Q17. After reading the recent review it seems that the Hercules is the top (or will be in December when its released). The thing is I thought the review said that the HyDis panels are Hyundai's under a different name. If this is true then the Hercules and the Q17 should be the same panel, which is also used in the Iiyama one from the same Q17 review group. Both 20ms both best ranked etc...

If this is true then my follow up is: Is the screen exactly the same in the few Q17 models we can get in the US or is that an older version.

The only one I can respond to would be 3:

The 172x and 173p have mostly the same specs, however, the 173p uses their PVA technology (or something like that) that they usually put into their high-end monitors. This is the one you can find in the US. In what seems like the rest of the world, there is the 172x with virtually the same specs but normal TN technology.

Now, I'm not sure exactly if these monitors are completely different, or just a slight modification- does anyone know the effect PVA has over TN, or if the 172x really is TN (I call this into question also because of the comments in the review stating the quality of the colors is much better than most TN monitors, although that could just be a redesign of the panel itself).

This I would greatly appreciate..

The Hitachi 17-inch LCD 1280 x 1024 Model - CML175SXW2B has the HyDis panel in it and only costs $419 at http://shop.monitorsdirect.com/product.asp?sku=2456082. Newegg.com also has it for a few dollars more.
Quote from the datasheet: "LCD Panel: Hydis".

Are they both (Samsung) 12ms? If not, that would be the most important spec to consider.

I just went to Samsung's US web site and it says the 173P has a response time of 25ms and the 172X has a response time of 12ms. I wouldn't even look at the 173P.
Edited by Trifler on 04/05/04 01:34 PM.

Hello,

The next review coming is a fight between 2 LCD 12 ms. It's coming very soon: it's already online on Tom French...

Ive read the new review. Basically it's full of bull****, especially about how the Samsung 172x is still worse than the HyDis 20ms at gaming. Ive tried both and know that this is definately not true.

Man, calm down. We all knew that you bought wrong monitor, but it's not a tragedy. Just kidding. 😛
I compared 172X and Hydis displays. I can't say that I saw any difference in sense of ghosting and blurring in games and video playback, but I can't say that 172X any faster than Hydis. Subjectively Hydis panel is faster in games, though it shows some afterglow in FPS games. 172X has better color reproduction in general and contrast. It may depend on modeles anyway. I tested Hitachi with Hydis. Hitachi also does not impress with its design and it's a really aging model. Looks like they're gonna replace it very soon.

Personally, I think its too minimal a difference to start arguing about. But on the other hand, I think its unfair saying that HyDis is better. Ive had the Hercules PV 920Dvi for about 2 months now and the Samsung 172x for about a week. And there is no way that the Hercules is better when it comes to UT2K4, might i add that the colour on the Hercules on Diablo 2 is quite blurred and its not something you want to stare at for too long when drunk or sober.

Basically, what im trying to say is that the reviews have become very highly critical on the new lcd's when it comes to the most minimalistic of differences. All the new state of the art LCD displays are all very similar, so basically theres no point on saying which ones are better as all of them have catagorys where some are better than the other, depending on what you are looking for.
