Question I’m having artifacting issues in just two games. Is my GPU defective?

I’m getting some strange graphics bugs in Rage 2 with a 6800 XT. I have the latest Windows 10 version, the latest GPU drivers, and the latest chipset drivers from my ASUS TUF GAMING B650 site:

Is my GPU defective? This is only happening in this one game. I’m seeing another issue, black squares, in Ashes of the Singularity too, but i watched several videos with different gpus that mostly had the same problem. Here’s one example from someone else since I’m getting 100% CPU usage even though I wasn’t with the 6950XT I returned due to this same issue:

I was able to resolve the first two issues by disabling AsyncCompute in the rage 2 config file. It seems this only happens in 4K and I was using the max settings. However, that last issue started happening after that. I’ve seen some posts complaining about bugs and artifacting issues in Rage 2 so it could just be the game. Also, do most games use Async Compute nowadays? I’m trying to find an intensive game with that same option to see if it’s an issue with my GPU.

I've noticed some artifacting issues with a 6800XT when I alt-tab out of some fullscreen games. I see stuff like QR code-like artifacts that show up in games like Overwatch in the black screen that shows up when I alt tab out of Overwatch. If I alt-tab out of World of Warships, I get a line of bright colors. These both go away immediately after the black screen though when I get back to my desktop. Is this normal, or is this a sign of a defective GPU or a faulty game? Doom 2016 crashes when I alt-tab too, but it seems that's a common issue with this game.

Additionally, I've noticed that opening LatencyMon causes my thumbnails on my desktop to all go blank for a second. They switch to that thumbnail that shows up when the thumbnail is missing. This isn't really important at all, but is this normal or is this a sign of a defective GPU?

Yup, as @geofelt said, check around on game specific forums.

Ashes, in particular, can give pretty much any graphics card a hard time, particularly as the map gets heavy with other (non-player characters). I have not ever noticed black squares, but set high enough and it hitches and tears a bit for me. IMO, on that one make sure to try various quality settings as well as between the engine options. I find Vulkan works pretty well for me, YMMV.

If the temperatures look fine (i.e., less than 90C average) and it's only happening in a handful of games, it's likely just the games that have an issue.
Is this the junction temp or the other GPU temp? I think it maxed out at 87 in RAGE 2 and other games based on what I’ve seen, but I’ll run HWINFO in the background when I get home to see the average temps. I haven’t noticed issues in any other games for sure.

If your problem happens on only two games, look to a game patch or a setting.
Forums for the game would be the most help.

I’ll look for any Rage 2 mods that help with this. As for settings, it looks like disabling AsyncCompute in the config file resolved the first two issues but caused the third issue. I’ll try out more games with AsyncCompute to see if that itself is causing issues in general, though I’ll have to find which ones have that setting first. And I’ll check out the forums then

I’ll take a look at those forums then. And I see so Ashes is just taxing in general. I’m seeing 100% CPU usage, so I can’t record it or anything, but I am seeing hitching alongside the black squares. I guess downgrading from a 6950XT to a 6800XT caused my CPU usage to spike somehow since it wasn’t 100% before. I’ll try out Vulkan then since I only tried out DX11 and DX12. Thanks!

The problem cannot be with the GPU if everything else runs fine except 2 specific games.

that makes sense. I saw some people say it could be an issue specific to one part of my VRAM that’s responsible for something in RAGE 2, but I suppose I’d have more issues with other games then. Thanks!

Ashes was, for a time, a favored benchmark tool for a lot of the content creator reviewers on YT simply due to how taxing it is.
That definitely makes sense why it’d be 100% CPU usage. It seems downgrading to a slightly worse GPU put some more load on the CPU. It seems both Ashes and RAGE 2 use AsyncCompute, so I’ll also try disabling that in Aahes as well to see if it fixes that issue; Doom also uses AsyncCompute and seems to be working fine, but I suppose that one’s less intensive. Thanks!

it seems that black square issue is unfortunately persisting with DX11, DX12, and Vulkan. Apparently, the newest version deprecated Vulkan, so I had to downgrade to the previous version to use Vulkan. What GPU do you have? I saw 5 out of 10 videos witb this same issue across many new GPUs, so perhaps it’s an issue with newer GPUs, even stuff like 4090s.

When I got the game I was using a 1080 and it did "fine" for its age. I have since upgraded to a 3070 and it runs the game "well". Just about the only issue I have from a performance standpoint is towards the end of the various challenges, and in particular the little map scenarios you can play outside the campaign I will get some hitching or stuttering. In particular this happens after a LOT of "equipment" is on the map. I haven't loaded it since updating to my current i9. The above was with the 11600K.

oh okay I see. I am having similar issues with performance as well so it’s good to hear that’s all normal. well, that black square thing is one weird issue, but, other than that, it’s good to hear everything’s normal and that performance issues are expected. Thanks!
