Should I buy just an i5 6500 or an i3 6100 and a 120gig ssd?

Get the i5. You can always add an SSD later on when budget allows.

An I5 if you intend to play a lot of new and hi end games on your system.

An I3 cpu is not recommended if you wish to play games on your system Noo_8.
