I am experiencing TERRIBLE performance with an i5 6300 and nvidia 960m

I recently installed Fortnite on my Dell inspiron 7559. I have seen in the reviews that people can play PUBG on high settings with 60+fps. When I loaded up Fortnite however, a similar game, I experienced heavy lag spikes and barely sustain 30fps. I updated Geforce experience, but nothing seems to work. Can someone help me?
Specs:
i5 6300
Nvidia Gtx geforce 960m
8gm ddr3 ram
256 ssd

You could try the Geforce Experience's game optimization feature to optimize the settings. What I would do is tab out of the game or use a second screen, and check vram usage in something like Asus GPU Tweak or MSI Afterburner, and CPU\Memory usage in task manager to see where your bottleneck is.

I have used the optimize feature already, but there was very little difference in performance. I will try to see where the bottle neck is though.
Update: I'm sorry, how do I use those programs? I am still learning about computers.

I think the problem may be related to your CPU. Awhile ago I had an old MSI laptop(6700HQ, 960m, 16GB Mem, 256GB SSD + 1TB HD) & one of my friends had an Asus laptop(i5-6300HQ, 960m, 8GB Mem - but he upgraded it to 16, 512GB SSD). We played some of the same games(Ghost Recon Wildlands, Resident Evil 7, Wolfenstein II, etc) yet the laptop I had always had better FPS then his. We'd use the same settings and do test plays, yet every single time... the one I had performed better(with Wildlands especially, it played much smoother).
The 2 main differences were the i7-6700HQ vs the i5-6300HQ and I installed games onto the standard HD, his games were installed onto his SSD.

Sorry, I'm not quite knowledgeable in computers. Could you please explain what you mean? I hav GTX 960m

Thank you for answering. I am wondering is there another solution besides upgrading my CPU? Also, I know someone who bought the same laptop as me, and they play PUBG high-med settings with 60-70 FPS. I am sure that with my specs I could play games at good fps, I'm just not sure what is preventing me from doing so

Basically, your laptop shouldn't be able to handle Fortnite at the settings you're on. Turn it down to medium settings or similar.

My settings are all low, resolution at like 50%. My friend uses an i3 and Intel graphics and gets 60fps. And higher settings than me. I think something is wrong with my computer, because it only displays 2 cores in task manager. I have quad core. Is there any quick fix you would know of?
Note: native resolution is about 89%. Mine is 50% or less. All settings low, optimized with Geforce experience. Maybe there are Control panel 3d settings to set? Also, when I first got the computer I could have sworn I saw 4 cores in task manager, and I chose to use 2 of them

actually, there are a lot to be done to optimize a PC to be able to handle games better.
starting from using the right version of the driver & never install nvidia experience, good nvidia control panel setting, streamlining your windows performance, making sure RAM works in dual channel mode, defragging HDD or upgrade to SSD, unparking CPU cores, disabling anti-virus, deleting temporary files, keeping check your PC temps, optimizing each game settings and sometimes capping fps.
it's rather too much to explain...

Hmmm... So Intel did put 4 cores on an i5.

There should be 4 cores in task manager. And maybe that's why your performance is worse than your friend's i3, which at least uses threads. Try resetting BIOS.

Sorry, I have been busy over the past week or a few days. Could you please teach me how to reset BIOS? In Dell BIOS I cannot find CPU options. Also, I believe it my issues may be due to CPU. When I opened task manager, CPU was at 100% while GPU was about 60 or less and memory at 87%. Thank you for letting me know about resetting.

Thank you for answering. I received mixed reviews about Geforce Experience. How can I streamline performance or dual channel RAM? I have defragged, but I have SSD. Also, what is unparking CPU cores? I checked the %temp% folders and cleared it. I am forced to cap fps to render, and all settings are on low. I have looked online for good control panel settings, however there was not much boost to fps. I apologize for being dumb on computers; I have only just started adjusting and learning about computers.
