I can overclock my chip very easily from 3.3 - 4. I can load test it fine, and it gets no where near temp threshold (54c max), and passes that test great. However, whenever i have to do anything involving graphics, ie a game or just windows bench tests, it locks the computer. Then, i would go and restart. The computer won't load windows anymore even if i unoverclock the cpu. I actually have to completely cut power to the maching in order for it to boot again, and then it is fine, so long as i don't overclock it again.

specs
ps = 1000 watt
cpu = 5820k
memory = 4x8 ddr4 2400 mhz, (not overclocked)
graphics = sli(x2) evga gtx 980 ACX 2.0
hd = m.2 ssd 128 gb
mb = asrock 99x extreme 6

try smaller intervals if its freezing like that its NOT A STABLE OVERCLOCK, also try uping the voltage

ps it would be help full to know voltages of the cpu not just the clock

I was using the easy overclock feature, forget the name. I'm at work so i can't check for myself, however it says it uses 1.20V online.
Is it normal for this sort of thing to only de-stabalize while using graphics?
Also is it normal for this to only be fixed once i cut power to the power supply. I had figured that if i took the oc away in bios, it would just run fine again.

it is likely due to too few volts to the cpu even though it appers to be the graphics that trigger the freezing of the computer. i would recommend turning off the easy over clock immediately and start form stock settings working your way up, here is a guide http://lifehacker.com/a-beginners-introduction-to-overclocking-your-intel-pr-5580998

easy or auto overclocking programs never work well and sometimes can cause serious issues including but not limited to blue screen over heating, and freezing. they just don't work well and sometimes just out right fail with certain variations in mobo and cpus

Awesome, thanks so much. Just to make sure, is it normal to have to cut all power to the pc to get it to start working again after an issue like this?

I believe so

one thing you have to remember when over clocking is that a mother board has a north and south bridge that control the many items attached to it and overclocking can affect these all though if done right it should not. This is the reason that you may only see crash when you start a game, or go in to hibernation.

I hope this helps, and that the unstable overclock is the only issues have fun manually overclocking, it can be tedious be rewarding.

I have another question about the ps setup before i keep going. Does it matter that i am powering one of my graphics cards with the cables that arent modular, or should i put them o. A different rail. I was reading about my ps and apparently it isn't the best of choices.

it depends on your specific psu and how many rails it has but it shouldn't matter for a good psu i would recommend posting this question separately in the psu thered of the form, psu aren't my realm of expertise sorry
