A cheap psu can become very expensive if it fails and destroys everything it is connected to.
Stick only with quality brands.
Look for a tier 1/2/3 unit from this list:

A GTX760 will do well with a 500w unit.

There is no such thing as a cheap power supply. There are only reliable psu's and time bomb psu's. Don't skimp on a psu - if it goes, it may take your cpu, m/b and gpu along for the ride.

That said, THIS is the best bang for the buck going - made by seasonic and a really good psu.

No. If you will sli down the road, you need a 750w psu. XFX has those, also.

power requirements are almost entirely dictated by your graphics configuration.
Peripherals like hard drives and fans take very little.
sli gtx760 will need more like a 700w psu.

A better upgrade would be to replace the GTX760 in the future with a good single card like a GTTX780.
Realize that your cpu is not that great as a high end gamer. You are likely to run out of cpu before you run out of graphics capability.

Is it better to buy a 800 watt psu when i purchase my new gtx 760 and now stick with a 550 watt psu?

If you are sure you will either be going sli with 760's or stepping up to a 780, I'd buy it now. One less thing to budget for in the future. The price difference between 550/600 and 750/850 is not all that great and gives you room to grow immediately.
