I am thinking of upgrading my pc and i wonder wich gpu to get

We need information on;

i am going to play open world games the like of the witcher 3
i am not going to look into the world of vr well not now and i will probably not upgrade to 2k or 4k anyday soon and i would be more than happy to keep it for like 2 years

for a constant 60fps at 1080p with the highest settings in any game i would go for 390X. a 970 should also handle it with AA toned down a bit.
if not planning on every game having it's highest possible settings; a 970 will definitely handle it easily. even a 390 should.

If it's two years only, no interest in VR and the Witcher 3, the GTX 970 is the better choice.

At the moment 970 will fulfill all your needs. it will run pretty much anything at 1080p at 60fps max graphics. you can buy an amd equivilant but the only advantage they have is more vram 4gb vs 3.5gb. this can actually matter at resolutions over 1080p in the near future or so however since you fine with 1080p I believe buying a 970 is a better choice since you'll also have those NVidia exclusive stuff like gameworks and shadowplay.

the AMD price and power equivalent of the GTX 970 is an 8GB 390. which is a better deal.

the statement, "you can buy an amd equivilant but the only advantage they have is more vram 4gb vs 3.5gb" is what i am referring to.

and there are already games that my 4GB card didn't have enough VRAM to handle when using their hi-res texture packs and highest settings even at 1080p. upgrading to the 8GB 290X solved those issues and gets much better fps than the 4GB 770 it replaced. anything using over 3.5*GB of VRAM will give a 970 trouble and as time goes on games use more and more.

for any benchmark you find that states a 970 outperforms the 390X, or even a 390, there are just as many showing the opposite for either card. even more actually showing the 390X on top. it all comes down to the price to determine which is a better deal at any given time. 8GB VRAM for a few dollars difference in either direction is a definite sell for me.

^ exactly what I was pointing to with my comment earlier.

Another fact which I've tried to put across is that nvidia cards tend to perform better with fx processors than comparative amd cards do , its not what you'd expect but its true.

In dying light & farcry 4 especially the 970 pulls 20% more draw calls than the 390 - it doesn't affect performance as those games are still CPU limited by the fx but dx12 may change this substantially.

well i think i will go with the r9 390 for the benchmarks between the r9 and the 970 get pretty much the same scores but the r9 has double the vram of the 970 and both of them are at the same price point
