I am replacing my stock cooler with a cooler master cooler on a hp omen 870-244 mobo. There is a bracket on the back that is keeping me from installing the new back plate. This back plate is also holding in part of the Intel socket. Am I missing something?

The short story is, you can't install an aftermarket cooler unless the cooler mounts to the top of that bracket with the threads lining up. The retention bracket itself is part of the board, so if you remove that you're essentially taking the entire top retention clip for the processor. It's stuff like these that HP have thought about to stop users from tampering with their builds and later claiming warranties for a mistake done by an end user.

Do i just return it? Or can i modify the back bracket so i can fit the aftermarket one over it?

Yes, pre-built vendors don't want u to mess with things.

U want to replace existing backplate with your own? it has different screw holes. Even if you are able to remove old, does Mobo even have the holes for the new? U do not EVER drill into Mobo even if u don't see any copper traces.

So your job is, find a cooler than will fit onto the existing backplate screws. If the existing screw pattern is standard, u have a chance.

The narrowness of your Evo backplate suggests an AMD type cooler to me, are u sure it's for Intel?

Anywhoo, find out whether that screw pattern is standard, and most likely, with motivation, u should find some kind of adapter.
