I am trying to upgrade my processor from dual to quad core in a gateway NV78 bought the processor now won't startup what else

Need information regarding upgrading from a dual core processor to a quad core in a Gateway NV78. Purchased the processor now computer won't start. What other changes might I need to make in order for this to work. I have heard maybe motherboard changes, RAM increase, fan speed increase, or that it may not be compatible with the BIOS. Help, please.

Did you make sure the motherboard supported that processor?

And you need to say what kind of motherboard. Also what was the model of the processor?
